Wings of Life is a gorgeously filmed movie by Disneynature, which portrays the intimate lives of flowers, bees, bats, butterflies and hummingbirds.  With breathtaking cinematography of this miniature world, it details why these tiny pollinating creatures are essential to the well-being of the Earth and human beings.    Wings of Life was filmed by Louie Schwartzberg, and narrated by 3-time Academy Award winner Meryl Streep.  It's available on bluray combo pack, digital, and on demand on April 16th, 2013.

Some of the film's footage that fascinated me the most was the multi-generational migration and lifecycle of the monarch butterfly; desert bats pollinating cactus flowers, which then turn into pitaya fruit that nourish them and their young; the "dance" of the hummingbird as it flits from flower to flower and after insects; and, orchid bees being "coerced" inside a bucket orchid flower for the purpose of pollination.  If you are also fascinated by the natural world, you will really enjoy Wings of Life and I highly recommend it!

Watch a preview below of Wings of Life.  The footage of the bees was shot within millimeters of the insect by using a pinhole lens, and not only is there an excellent view of pollen on a bee's legs or its tiny tongue--but the background remains absolutely clear.  Disneynature used multiple cameras, time-lapse, high-speed cinematography and patience to capture the remarkable footage.  One digital camera employed in the filming was capable of 1500 frames per second!  The result is spectacular high-definition imagery and  sound quality.

I was particularly in awe of the hummingbird's dance.  Did you know that a hummingbird's wings can beat up to 200 times per second?  Look how the footage is slowed down so you can appreciate the hummingbird's graceful movements.  At the same time, notice how the background is picture perfect with no blurring.

Disneynature's Wings of Life is available on bluray combo pack, digital, and on demand on April 16th, 2013!

Have you seen any Disneynature movies before like Earth, Oceans or Chimpanzee?  What is your favourite bird or flower?
