Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Hard Luck Book Review & CONTEST! (~OVER~)

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Hard Luck is #8 in the Series!
It came as a surprise to me that my son was a reluctant reader at 8-years old, as he had always enjoyed storybooks as a younger child.  Getting him to do his reading homework was a chore for me, and an unpleasant one at that.  He just was not enjoying reading at all.  That is, until he discovered the "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" chapter books by Jeff Kinney.

Once my son discovered this book series, I noticed an immediate transformation in his willingness to read, and in his interest in reading.  I believe that this is because The Diary of a Wimpy books feature text with funny cartoons throughout, making it more interesting for reluctant readers to read on.

In Stores Today!

My son first started reading slowly, finishing the first book in the series: "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" in a one-week period.  The next book, "Rodrick Rules" he read in 3 days.  The third book, "The Last Straw", he read in two days, and by the fourth book, "Dog Days", he had read in just one day.  To say that there was an improvement in his reading habits would be an understatement.

My son went on to read books #5 "The Ugly Truth", #6 "Cabin Fever", and #7 "The Third Wheel"--completing the seventh book in an evening.  His new thirst for reading was insatiable, and he quickly read through the entire series.
Engrossed in Reading Hard Luck
I was delighted when my son came home from school one day and announced that there was a new Diary of a Wimpy Kid book, (Hard Luck) coming out soon.  He was ecstatic about the book release, and asked me about it every day until I secured him an advance book copy to read over.  My son read it hungrily, and announced that it was his favourite book out of the entire series.

Here is what my 8-year old son says about the book:

"Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Hard Luck, by Jeff Kinney is about the main character, Greg Heffley, having to work things out on his own, because he and Rowley are no longer best friends.  And Rowley has his own opinions now."

"One of my favourite parts in the story is when Greg Heffley believed what his Magic 8-Ball was telling him, because they don't predict real stuff and he believed it!"
An Excerpt from My Son's Book Report on Hard Luck
"I also liked the part in the book when people paid .10¢ to smell Noland's breath, because it smelled like french fries!"

"Hard Luck was my favourite book in the entire series because it was the funniest, the cartoons were great (although I enjoyed the story even more than the cartoons), and I liked Rowley and Greg Heffley the most out of all of the book's characters."
No Longer a Reluctant Reader
"Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Hard Luck was easy for me to read and I liked that it was long, so I could have lots of fun with it, finish it and then look forward to reading the next book in the series.  I recommend it for boys or girls ages 7- to 10-years old."

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Hard Luck by Jeff Kinney is out in bookstores (and online) today, November 5th, 2013!  My son and I would recommend Hard Luck, and any of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books, for your holiday shopping list this year!

  4. no, I've not heard of Diary of a Wimpy Kid books before but then my children are grown and my grandchildren too young as yet. Each child is different and whilst some read quickly others are much slower. One of my daughters was crafty (& lazy enough) to let her younger sister read to her at bedtime, I worried about her lack of progress! When I now look at how far this daughter has come in life I'm amazed that the beginning was so difficult.
