Our Winter Barbecue |
If you're Canadian, you can attest that it's been a loooong winter--and spring has been dangled before us, kind of like a carrot to a rabbit. However, my family barbecues all year long, even in the arctic chill of winter--and we keep the flame for spring alive (literally and figuratively).
This March Break, we've had some amazing extremes of temperature. One day +10°C, another day -17°C. For those of you keeping track, that's a difference of 27°C in less than 24 hours! That's Canada for you, and two years ago I wrote about the crazy weather in Toronto on March 9th 2012 (parkas and a snow squall), vs. the weather on March 22nd, 2012 (swimsuits and children in the kiddy pool)!

Sometimes Only a Hotdog Will Do When You're 3-Years Old! |
Today after tobogganing for hours and building snow forts, the kids decided that only hot dogs would do. After coming in from the snowy hill, they had worked up an appetite and wanted something quick and hot. My wonderful dad, nephew, and niece were also over, so my husband fired up the grill and made a barbecue of saucy pork back ribs, dogs, grilled veggies and Villaggio Italian Style Sausage Buns.
Never mind that the barbecue was buried beneath two feet of snow, there's no keeping the Canadian spirit down! In -15°C I wish to report that my hubby was wearing a parka, but he marinated the ribs and flipped the dogs wearing only a long-sleeved shirt. So Canadian, eh?

Do you barbecue throughout the winter at your home? What are you most looking forward to about spring?
Here in Upstate NY we had a day that was almost 50! Kids were out on their bikes and scooters. I would have loved to do some grilling - what a great idea!
ReplyDeleteSounds like a fun day! We're in NH and I can totally relate. Love treating us to the BBQ dinners once in awhile in the winter too! Hope spring is around the corner for you! We just had another storm....will it ever end?
ReplyDeleteLooks delicious! I would like to bbq during the winter but this year we haven't been able to get to the bbq because of all the snow. I've been slowly digging out a path though. I'm looking forward to the warmer weather and the snow being gone!
ReplyDeleteBuying and planting flowers!!! Can't wait to spruce up my front yard with beautiful flowers and watching the birds sign. When will spring arrive in your area???
ReplyDeleteKim, spring officially arrives next week but will only warm up a bit in April.
DeleteYes, we live pretty far south, so we're usually the only state not getting snow. We grill all year long and love it.
ReplyDeletelove bbqing! Rain snow or shine well be usin g ours!
ReplyDeleteOk, now we totally have to bring out the barbecue! Thanks for the inspiration. A week ago a neighbor was barbecuing and it smelled so good!
ReplyDeleteWe're the same way, winter does not mean put the grill away. It means we're constantly running back and forth inside and out so we can grill all year round. lol
ReplyDeleteI am sad to say that I have not been able to use the BBQ this winter. It has been buried under tons of snow.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait for grilling season! I miss it all winter long! food tastes so much better on a grill!

The warm weather came so quickly, I never thought of having a BBQ!! I love BBQ and its my favourite part of summer!! What a great idea of sneaking it in!!
ReplyDeleteWe BBQ all year long and even have bon fires. The snow does not stop us from being outdoors. But Spring makes me start my gardens and I love hearing the birds
ReplyDeleteI am sure this felt so nice after a long winter - even if it was still cold out.
ReplyDeleteWe BBQ year round!! I can't wait for spring so we can get rid of all the winter gear... my front entry is CROWDED.
ReplyDeleteGood for you! It sounds like a wonderful day. We BBQ year round, but don't have the extreme weather you have.
ReplyDeleteWe BBQ all year long too! Nothing beats BBQ'd food :)
ReplyDeleteYummy yummy! We barbecue year round, but hubby's been away this winter and spring for training, and I don't grill. Hopefully next winter I can enjoy some hot dogs even in March!
ReplyDeleteThey Look Like Tasty Buns!
ReplyDeleteWe have not started ours up this year. But I cannot wait to.
ReplyDeleteWe also BBQ all year long, even with the snow. -Amber

ReplyDeletelove BBQ's, glad it's not snowing for your to BBQ!~
ReplyDeleteCan not wait for barbecue weather.
ReplyDeleteWinter can be so depressing, so much cold and snow and the sun goes into hiding. Love that you barbecued during March break. Winter will not stop you!
ReplyDeleteMy husband grilled last night because it was above freezing. March is just crazy, weather-wise!
ReplyDeleteOh, how I miss barbequing. I can hardly wait for my husband to come back home and do some during weekends. I hope the weather gets warm over there too, soon :)
ReplyDeleteLol, it looked like ours few weeks ago, but luckily West coast got warm spell so it's actually pretty good for Spring break :)
ReplyDeleteThat's the way to do it. Snow be darn-ed! :)
ReplyDeleteCanada is not the only place suffering from too long and winter and Spring repeatedly being dangled and taken away. I'm ready to grill out. That's for sure!
ReplyDeleteLooks really delicious! I love a good barbeque. No matter the season, lol
ReplyDeleteWe use our BBQ all year round here in NS. Sometimes we need to dig it out of the snow but that just makes it a little more special. I love the way the aromas of the BBQ come into the house in colder weather.
ReplyDeleteI love how you can and WILL use your BBQ even when it's freezing outside! Our temperatures aren't quite as extreme as you guys out east, but we use our BBQ year round! It is totally worth it though. Meat is so much better when you get that smokey taste from the BBQ.
ReplyDeletewe do BBQ during the winter !...as long as we can get to the bbq thru the snow !
ReplyDeleteI am sure this was so nice after a long winter, here we had another storm last night .

ReplyDeleteWe always bbq in the winter, it saves on mess.
ReplyDeleteStill too cold and windy for a bbq here but this food looks so good
ReplyDeleteAs Canadians, any weather is BBQ weather! :D
ReplyDeleteno bbq yet still got snow yesterday
ReplyDeleteYour Family is Sooo Canadian. That must be the spirit and stamina of our ancestors who left the Old World to come to the New. They must have been very determined and positively thinking people. Your grilled food looked delicious and I could SMELL it. Hugs.
ReplyDeleteApparently I am starving, as I am envious of those hotdogs! We will BBQ throughout the winter but aren't as hardcore as you with 2ft of snow. We will only do it if the BBQ and deck around the BBQ is clear of snow! I remember the strange March weather a couple years back, I think we hit 28 and I had a job interview that day. I never felt like such an idiot wondering what to wear and then a few days later it snowed.
ReplyDeleteThis year we are doing the turkey on the BBQ for Christmas, mmmmm can't wait, it's going to be so good!!
ReplyDeleteOh my Lynda Cook that sounds like a great idea,I just love BBQ anytme
